Kieren Fallon enjoyed a double at Doncaster to trim the lead of his jockeys' title rival Frankie Dettori.
But Dettori had a winner of his own at Newbury to ensure that he remains well ahead of the Irishman with the Flat season winding down to a close.
Fallon's hopes may be over but he had the consolation of landing the season's final British Group One of the when Motivator won the Racing Post Trophy.
He then followed up with victory on Andronikos in the following race.
Dettori's winner came at Newbury, where he partnered Godolphin's Descartes to victory.
The colt is by Dubai Millennium and his victory saw his odds cut for next season's Classics.
Both Fallon and Dettori are riding in the Canadian International in Toronto on Sunday before returning to domestic action at Leicester on Monday.
The Italian is 20 winners clear in the title race.
