Veteran Persian Punch delighted punters as he claimed his second Goodwood Cup by the narrowest of margins.
The ten-year-old, ridden by Martin Dwyer, was challenged all the way by Darryll Holland on last year's winner Jardines Lookout but just got his nose in front on the line.
The David Elsworth-trained horse, who went off at 7-2, set the pace all the way and going into the home straight he found himself caught by Jardines Lookout and Swing Wing.
But Dwyer kept Persian Punch ahead to the line for one of the most popular wins of the meeting, with Frankie Dettori on Savannah Bay running on well for third five lengths back.
After the win, Dwyer brought his mount - the oldest winner in the race's 191-year history - back in front of the packed stands to huge cheers.
It was the gelding's sixth run in the race - he won in 2001, but was last 12 months ago.
Persian Punch's owner Jeff Smith was thrilled to see his loyal servant triumph again.
"He is just the most extraordinary animal I think I've ever seen. I've run out of words and superlatives really," he said.
"I was delighted when one took him on so early then another one took him on."
Trainer David Elsworth enjoyed great success with another hugely popular horse, the flying grey Desert Orchid.
Of Persian Punch, Elsworth said: "He's gets on with his job. He never seems to ask anything and gives everything.
"He's a wonderful horse to be involved with."
