Eddery celebrates his victory with Reel Buddy
|
Veteran Pat Eddery claimed a fairytale success in his last season by winning the Group One Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on outsider Reel Buddy.
To mark the 51-year-old's latest big-race triumph, his fellow jockeys gave him a standing ovation as he entered the winner's enclosure.
The 20-1 shot trained by Richard Hannon edged out Statue of Liberty, Norse Dancer, Zafeen and Moon Ballad in a tight finish.
Statue of Liberty (6-1), with Michael Kinane on board, was beaten into second place by a head, with Richard Quinn on Norse Dancer (8-1) a short head back in third in the nine-runner race.
"Everything went nice. I just had to squeeze him because if you slap him he pulls up on you," said Eddery, who will retire at the end of the season.
He was delighted with the reception from his weighing room colleagues.
"They're a good bunch of blokes in there and we all get on well with each other. It's really nice that they were there," he said.
Eddery, who has been champion jockey 11 times, was securing his sixth Sussex Stakes' victory.
Trade Fair, ridden by Richard Hughes, was sent off the 9-4 favourite but dropped away inside the last furlong.
