Vinnie Roe achieved a unique hat-trick of victories in the Irish St Leger at the Curragh.
Pat Smullen's mount had been odds-on for last year's win but on this occasion was a 2-1 second favourite to 2002 Doncaster winner Bollin Eric.
Vinnie Roe, who has also won a Leger in France, took up the pace from Kieren Fallon's mount Gamut who had led for well over a mile.
Bollin Eric had been held back at the rear by jockey Kevin Darley and began to move up after the six-furlong marker.
But the winner of the 2002 English Leger could not summon a serious challenge in the charge for home as Vinnie Roe produced some unbeatable acceleration.
Gamut was the gallant runner-up by a length while the three-year-old Powerscourt stayed on well but could not quite get to the
first two.
"This horse is an absolute monster," said winning jockey Pat Smullen.
"Three in a row is unbelievable. The horse has tremendous heart and guts."
Trainer Dermot Weld said Vinnie Roe could well be entered in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
"He is such a joy to train," said Weld.
"Melbourne was tough on him and we took our time.
"But I believe he can be better than ever and that there is more to come from him.
"We have no definite plan, but the Arc is a real possibility."
