All the action as it happened from Grand National day at Aintree.

Bumper crowds of over 65,000 race fans enjoyed fine weather at the Liverpool course where the going was good.


1545 BST Martell Cognac Grand National Chase 4m 4f

1 Monty's Pass (16-1)
2 Supreme Glory (40-1)

4 Gunner Welburn (16-1)

Monty's Pass, ridden by Barry Geraghty and trained by Jimmy Mangan, wins the 2003 Martell Cognac Grand National at Aintree by 12 lengths.

  • Gunner Welburn, Monty's Pass, Amberleigh House, Shotgun Willy and Supreme Glory are the only horses left with a chance to claim victory.
  • Gingembre, Red Striker and Killusty are all out of the race.
  • Gunner Welburn leads the field, which loses four at the 19th fence.
  • Katarino falls at the chair and Tony McCoy and Iris Bleu pull up at the water.
  • Youlneverwalkalone and Chives pull up after the 12th fence.

    Ruby Walsh riding Risky Reef won the opening race of the final day of racing at Aintree.

    The Andrew Lee-trained Irish raider was neck-and-neck with Altay over the last two fences, but had the stamina to push his rival into second spot.

    Tom Scudamore on Idaho D'ox had led the field for much of the race, but tired with four fences to jump.


    1420 BST Martell Maghull Novice Chase Grade One 2m

    1 Le Roi Miguel (9-4)
    2 Vol Solitaire (10-3)
    3 Impek (6-4 fav)

    Ruby Walsh made it two wins out of two with another perfectly timed race, riding Le Roi Miguel to a 12 length victory.

    The Paul Nicholls-trained five-year-old tucked in behind stablemate Vol Solitaire before taking control with three fences to go.

    Impek, trained by Henrietta Knight, started as favourite but could only mange third spot.

    Only three of the five-horse field completed the race, with Tysou falling at the first and Rathgar Beau falling at the same fence a circuit later.


    1455 BST Martell Cognac Aintree Hurdle Grade One 2m

    1 Sacundai (9-1)
    2 Rooster Booster (5-4 fav)
    3 Like-a-Butterfly (11-2)
    4 Quazar (25-1)

    Ruby Walsh made it a remarkable 680-1 hat-trick of successes as Sacundai (9-1) edged out Rooster Booster in the third race of the day.

    Rooster Booster (5-4) looked set to follow up his Champion Hurdle triumph when he jumped the last in front.

    But jockey Richard Johnson lost his whip and Sacundai rallied to nudge ahead in a thrilling finish.

    Like-A-Butterfly, the last ever ride of jockey Charlie Swan, finished in third.
