Weld seals Irish success
Dermot Weld celebrates a second Melbourne Cup success
Weld savours his second Cup win
Trainer Dermot Weld celebrated a great day for Ireland as he clinched his second Melbourne Cup victory with the victory of Media Puzzle.

Weld was behind the only previous European success in Australia's biggest horse race, when Vintage Crop triumphed in 1993.

And the 54-year-old succeeded Down Under again when Media Puzzle claimed a two-length win, with stable companion Vinnie Roe a brave fourth under top weight.

"It was a wonderful feeling, a very proud moment. Our plan operated perfectly," he said.

  Dermot Weld profile
Born: 29 July, 1948
Married: to Mary, two sons Mark & Christopher.
Education: Trinity College, Dublin.
Riding career: First winner at age of 15 and won Irish amateur riders' championship three times
First trainer's licence: 1972.
Stable: Rosewell House, Curragh.
Feat: Set new record for number of winners trained in Ireland (2,578) in August 2000

The win earned Media Puzzle's connections A$2.4 million (830,000).

"Vinnie Roe has run a wonderful race. He hasn't let us down on a track that was too firm for him. He'll be back," Weld added.

The trainer reflected on his desire to add to his enviable Cup record in the 3,200-metres handicap.

"I always said I would come back for the Melbourne Cup when I had the right horse," Weld said.

"Time flies. The last year Vintage Crop ran I thought it was his best ever performance. He was a nine-year-old and he gave his all.

"Two years ago (when fourth in the English St Leger) I said Media Puzzle would win a Melbourne Cup.

  Weld's major race wins
Epsom Oaks: Blue Wind 1981
Irish 1000 Guineas: Prince's Polly 1982, Trusted Partner 1988
Irish 2000 Guineas: Flash Of Steel 1986

Irish Oaks: Blue Wind 1981, Dance Design 1996
Irish St Leger: Vintage Crop 1993 & 1994, Vinnie Roe 2001 & 2002
Melbourne Cup: Vintage Crop 1993 & Media Puzzle 2002
Belmont Stakes: Go And Go 1990

"In fact, he then had an unfortunate fracture and broke his pelvis and stood in a box for four and half months. He's fought all the way back for us.

"Media Puzzle adores this country and so do I. What a great day for Ireland."

Weld paid tribute to the winning jockey amid emotional scenes.

Damien Oliver steered Media Puzzle to victory just a week after the jockey's brother Jason died in a riding accident.

"It's a wonderful moment for Damien Oliver. I'm so proud of him," said the trainer.

Oliver, who also rode Doriemus to victory in the 1995 Cup, said: "Dermot Weld is truly one of the greatest trainers in the world."
