Vinnie Roe claims Irish Leger
Pat Smullen celebrates victory on Vinnie Roe
Vinnie Roe repeated his 2001 win in the Jefferson Smurfit Memorial Irish St Leger by winning Saturday's running at the Curragh. The Dermot Weld-trained four-year-old was backed down to 4/7 before the off. Ridden by Pat Smullen, he justified the enthusiasm of the punters with a good win, taking the lead just before the furlong marker. Pugin was second at odds of 10-1 with Ballingarry repeating his third placing in the Budweiser Irish Derby. The Clive Brittain-trained Warrsan kept on well for fourth while John Dunlop's Millenary faded out of contention in the closing stages. Vinnie Row now heads to Australia next week for the Melbourne Cup. "He never knows when to quit," said trainer Dermot Weld. "He is a very brave horse, one of the toughest I have ever trained. "And he has beaten a high-class field."
