Ireland's women lost 4-1 to Australia in their final World Cup qualifying game in Chile on Sunday.

After going 2-0 down early on, Alex Speers reduced Ireland's deficit but Australia scored two goals in the second half to secure victory.

Defeats by Malaysia and Scotland in Ireland's opening two qualifiers ended their chances of securing the one place available for the World Cup.

The Irish team managed one win, beating Chile 3-0 in Santiago on Saturday.

Megan Frazer, Cliodhra Sargent and Nikki Symons were on target for the Irish in that game.

Their hopes of securing qualification ended when they lost 2-0 to Scotland on Thursday.

Ireland had lost 3-0 to Malaysia in their opening game on Wednesday.
