England's Ashley Jackson named Young Player of the Year

Ashley Jackson has become the first Englishman to be named Young Player of the Year by the sport's governing body.

Jackson, 22, helped England win the European Championships this summer and was in the squad that finished bottom at the elite Champions Trophy.

"This year has been a breakout one for Ashley. He has got so much potential and will only get better," said England coach, Jason Lee.

Born in Kent, he plays for Dutch side HGC and made his England debut in 2006.

"He's a key ingredient in our midfield and gives us a lot of drive going forward. He's got so much potential and will only get better," added Lee.

"This award is not about being voted for by the people watching the game, it's about being recognised for playing good hockey by team-mates and other players," said Jackson.

No Englishman had previously won either the young players' award or the main men's award, which this year went to Australia's Jamie Dwyer.

Argentina's Luciana Aymar and Dutch star Naomi van As shared the women's award, with another Australian, Casey Eastham, picking up the trophy for young players.
