Wales & Scotland miss World Cup

Hockey

The Welsh and Scottish men's hockey teams will not compete at the 2010 World Cup after failing to make it through a final qualifying tournament.

New Zealand, the hosts of the six-team tournament, finished first to reach the 2010 World Cup finals in India.

Scotland beat China in a penalty shoot-out on the last day of the competition to finish third, with only one qualification place on offer.

Wales finished last after losing a play-off against Austria.

Malaysia missed out on a place at the World Cup having lost 2-1 to New Zealand in Sunday's final.

The other nations to have qualified to date are Australia, Canada, England, Germany, India, the Netherlands, Pakistan, South Africa, South Korea and Spain.

One qualifying tournament remains, to be held in Argentina, featuring the hosts alongside Belgium, Chile, the Czech Republic, Ireland and the United States.
