O'Connor medal verdict confirmed
Cian O'Connor on Waterford Crystal
Cian O'Connor's horse failed a drugs test in Athens
Irish showjumper Cian O'Connor has been officially stripped of the gold medal he won at the Athens Olympics.

His horse Waterford Crystal failed a drugs test and the IOC's executive board has now ratified the decision to disqualify the horse and rider.

O'Connor had already returned his gold medal to the IOC which will now be awarded to Brazil's Rodrigo Pessoa.

IOC president Jacques Rogge now plans to award the medal to Pessoa in person on a trip to Brazil.

O'Connor claimed the drugs, used to treat high blood pressure in humans, were given to Waterford Crystal a month before the Games when it was having hydrotherapy treatment on a fetlock injury, and that they in no way boosted performance.
