Great Britain's David Stone followed his success in the T2 time trial with a convincing road race win at the UCI World Paracycling Road Championships. Having led by 40 seconds at halfway in Canada, he pushed on to bring his tricycle home two minutes clear. "I was already world champion, but to become double world champion is fantastic," said the 29-year-old. Elsewhere there were sixth-place finishes for Britain's Russ White and Lora Turnham and Rebecca Rimmington. Italy's Giorgio Farroni,
who finished second in the time trial on Thursday,
had to settle for silver once again after seeing Stone accelerate away on the main climb on the first of two laps of the course. Any hope he had of reeling in Birmingham-born Stone disappeared as the leader extended his advantage with a typically powerful performance. "I was cold at the start, so it took me a while to warm up, but when I did I pushed on up the main climb, which was where I got the gap," said Stone. "It is amazing to be world road champion and this is definitely my favourite event." Russ White, competing in the C5 road race for athletes with minimum impairments, led home the chasing pack as a well-drilled Brazilian team surged to the front of a five-rider breakaway, wrapped up all the podium places and delivered gold for Gohr Soelito. The women's tandem road race for blind or visually impaired athletes provided the finale for the Championships and the Canadian duo of Lyne Bessette and Robi Weldon dominated with Turnham and Rimmington sprinting clear at the head of the third group home.
