Cycling scheme success in BBC award

A new cycling scheme in Hull has won the first BBC Power of Sport award, supported by Sport England for East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

The aiming high project has already attracted 50 disabled youngsters and their families to one of the city's local parks.

Organiser Simon Berry told BBC Look North: "The opportunity to experience cycling is seven days a week."

The facility is set to expand to provide proper changing facilities.

Berry added: "A lot of young people aged up to 19 had never been on a cycle before."

Adapted cycle
Each cycle costs 3,000 to build

Each of the specially adapted bikes from Germany cost around £3,000 to buy and more are expected to be purchased as the project expands.

Paul Maxey, who cares for disabled cyclist Paul Thornton, said: "It gives [Paul] a lot of freedom as he finds it hard to walk sometimes."

The cyclists have been allocated a safe loop of road around Hull's biggest green space, East Park, to participate in the scheme.
