McGlynn and Hunter break World Record

Tandem pair Neil Fachie and Barney Storey and Paralympian Darren Kenny won gold for Britain on day one of the Para-Cycling Track World Championships.

Visually impaired former athlete Fachie and his pilot Storey set a new world record to win the B&VI 1km time trial.

Three-time Paralympic judo gold medallist Simon Jackson and Dave Readle finished second in Manchester.

Paralympic champion Kenny, who has cerebral palsy, beat compatriot Rik Waddon to the CP3 1km time-trial title.

Fachie and Storey's new world best of one minute, 02.217 seconds, surpassed the previous best set by Anthony Kappes and Storey at the Beijing Paralympics by 0.647secs.

"It's just amazing," said 25-year-old Scot Fachie, who competed in the 100m and 200m sprint events in Beijing before switching to cycling.

"I knew we were going really well in training and I knew we were in with a shout.

"To finally be able to do it and put all the training to good use, it hasn't quite sunk in, but I'm delighted.

"I never got to this level in athletics and I can't wait to get up on the podium and experience it now and have my medal round my neck. To be a world record holder as well is just phenomenal."

Six-time Paralympic gold medallist Kenny claimed his 11th world champion's rainbow jersey with a storming last lap to beat Waddon.

Kenny, who also won the road race at the Para-Cycling Road World Championships in Italy in September, was behind Waddon at each of the first three splits before pulling it back to win by 0.041secs.

"I didn't know how far down I was," he admitted afterwards. "I just went out there and did what I could do."
