GB trio set new European records

Paralympians Louise Watkin, Stephanie Millward and Heather Frederiksen all set new European records at the ASA National 50m Championships.

Watkin claimed her new marks in both the 50m butterfly and 100m breaststroke in her S9 category in Sheffield.

Millward, who swims in the same S9 category, did the same in the 100m butterfly event.

Frederiksen, who has been in superb form this week, also set a new best in the S8 100m butterfly.

Watkin, who won a silver and three bronzes at the Beijing Paralympics, was thrilled with her breaststroke swim after she lowered the British record to one minute 25.03 seconds in the heats before a European record of 1:23.51 in the final.

"It's unbelievable," said the 16-year-old. "I broke the record in the morning but I knew that I could have gone faster.

"I didn't think I would go 1:23, maybe 1:24, and throughout the whole race I didn't know what was going on, but it just felt good."

Millward's new record of 1:10.61 beats the previous mark of 1:11.05.

"I was very pleased with the swim," she admitted. "I was looking forward to it in the heats and thought hopefully I would swim fast.

"I was pushed all the way by Rhiannon Henry, who I train with sometimes, so I knew she would swim fast, but I was very pleased to get the European record.

"Training's been going very well. It is hard work, my coach Billy Pye pushes me just that little bit too hard but it's definitely worth it."

Frederiksen's record came in the heats with her time of 1:15.54 comfortably inside the previous figures of 1:17.54.

There were also British records for Sean Fraser (S8 50m freestyle), Dave Ellis (S13 100m butterfly), Claire Cashmore (SB8 100m breaststroke), Dan Pepper (SB14 100m breaststroke).
