Britain claims Global Games golds

Sprinters Allan Stuart and Monique Davis and swimmers Dan Pepper and Craig Moate helped lead Britain to glory at the Global Games in the Czech Republic.

The event, for athletes with an intellectual disability, saw Britain win 24 medals, including eight golds.

Stuart claimed a double in the 200m and 400m and finished second in the 100m while Davis won the women's 100m.

In the pool, Pepper won double gold in the 50m and 200m breaststroke while Moate triumphed in the 1500m freestyle.

The pair also claimed another gold as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay squad, along with Ben Procter and Craig Rodgie.

Pepper, Procter and Rodgie brought the curtain down on their success with a world record victory in the 4x100m medley relay, along with Nick Boylan.

Stuart, 27, competed at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics, winning silver, but a row over intellectual disability erupted at the Games when it was found that most of the members of the victorious Spanish basketball team were not disabled.

Since then, athletes have been banned from competing at the Athens and Beijing Paralympics but talks are ongoing between the International Sports Federation for Persons with an Intellectual Disability (Inas-Fid) and the International Paralympic Committee.

A decision on whether they will be allowed compete in London 2012 is expected at the International Paralympic Committee conference in November.

UK Sports Association for People with Learning Disability national director Tracey McCillen hopes that the GB team's performance in the Czech Republic will help pave the way for their inclusion.

"The Global Games is a formidable challenge for any athlete. The team have demonstrated their ability and deserve the respect and recognition as British performance athletes, including benefiting from the millions of pounds invested in sport and training for London 2012," she said.

"Our athletes need to be invested in now in anticipation of a positive IPC decision this year, otherwise how will they have a chance of preparing as future Paralympians?"
