Derry sprinter Jason Smyth completed a sprint double at the Paralympics as he again bettered his own world record to win the T13 200 metres gold.

Smyth cut .38secs off the world mark that he set in Monday's heats to take the gold in 21.43.

The Irishman was well ahead of Russian Alexey Labzin (21.87) and Azerbaijan's Vugar Mehdivev (22.00).

The visually-impaired athlete set two world records on the way to winning the 100m title on Saturday.

Smyth revealed that he went into Tuesday's final carrying a "hamstring niggle".

"I was wondering what was going to happen but I had to put it to the back of my mind and attack the bend," Smyth told BBC Sport.

"I'm delighted that it went to plan.

Jason Smyth was celebrating another gold on Tuesday

"Going round the lap of honour, it was hard. I had to stop and walk (because of the hamstring injury).

"But with the support here and it's great that my family are out here. My mum and dad, my brother and my best friend Ben.

"Going out and doing what was expected is a big relief."

The 21-year-old made light of the wet conditions in the Bird's Nest to stride to a comprehensive victory.

Smyth's two paralympics titles add to the double gold that he achieved at the 2006 World Games in Holland.

The Eglinton native is currently ranked as the second best overall sprinter in Ireland, behind Paul Hession, and Smyth believes that he is capable of qualifying for the 2012 Olympics in London.

For Smyth to achieve that, he will probably need to run in the region of 20.55 for 200m or 10.20 for 100m.

However, Smyth and his coach Stephen Maguire believe that those times are not out of reach for the Londonderry man.
