GB women fail to make semi-final

Halesowen's Jordanne Whiley
Whiley suffered defeat in Italy on her 16th birthday

Great Britain's women's wheelchair tennis players - including Halesowen's Jordanne Whiley - have failed to make the semi-finals of the World Team Cup.

Team GB took the third seeds and former champions USA to a deciding doubles rubber in Cremona, Italy.

Whiley, playing on her 16th birthday, lost the opening singles 6-3 6-1.

British number one Lucy Shuker levelled the match but she and Whiley lost the doubles on the tie-break. GB play off for fifth-eighth place against China.

The men's team remain on course for promotion back to the elite group of 16 nations after winning their World Group 2 quarter-final against Russia.

They will now face third seeds Germany for a place in the semi-finals where a win would see them back in the top group for the World Team Cup.
