Events at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai have been disrupted by the after-effects of typhoon Krosa.

Now downgraded to a tropical storm, the cold front reached Shanghai around 1500BST on Sunday afternoon and reduced the bustling city to a standstill with torrential rain.

Holidays and leave were cancelled for sewage and flood workers as the Chinese authorities worked around the clock to ensure all sports venues remained available for competition.

However, several events, including golf, sailing, cricket and equestrian have been postponed until further notice.

Earlier, the typhoon struck China's east coast, causing five reported deaths and extensive property damage.

Almost 1million people were evacuated to higher ground as water levels continued to rise.

Shanghai Daily reported that all of the participating athletes continue to remain safe and well, and will be provided with entertainment in the event of cancelled events.

The colder spell and heavy rainfall is expected to last until late on Tuesday afternoon.

159 British athletes are competing in the Special Olympics, and have so far picked up medals in the swimming and equestrian events.

The full list of cancelled or postponed events:

Golf - No competition on Monday.
