Darts star halves his weight

Andy Fordham is hoping to resurrect his darts career at the World Masters after doctors took him off the emergency waiting list for a liver transplant.

Kent's 2004 BDO world champion, 46, is suffering from cirrhosis of the liver after years of alcohol abuse.

But after losing 15 stone since collapsing at the 2007 World Championship, the operation has been postponed for at least three years.

"It'd be nice to get on the stage a few more times," he told BBC Radio Kent.

"If I can get back to a decent standard that will be a massive battle for me and it'd be great."

I don't remember going out there, I don't remember getting the trophy, nothing

Fordham will be playing at the 2008 World Masters in Bridlington, which starts on Saturday.

He made his comeback on the world stage at the event last year, but felt it was too soon.

"My confidence has gone totally rock bottom so if I can get a couple of wins under my belt - I don't mean tournaments, just a couple of games - that'd be good," he said.

"It is difficult because when I first went out I didn't feel right at all and I felt I was wasting my own time and other people's time.

"Now I feel much better in myself and I'm coming out of myself a bit more and getting that little bit of confidence.

"So hopefully this could be the start of three to five years of giving it a good go and then getting myself back to the doctor and getting them to look after me."

Fordham's biggest dream would be to win the BDO title again as he has no memory of his 2004 victory.

"It would be nice to win it and remember it because I don't remember a thing of the final," he said.

"I watched it the other day for the first time.

"I don't remember going out there, I don't remember getting the trophy, nothing.

"It's sad really when you think what a day it was."

Fordham, who once boasted of drinking 25 bottles of beer before a match, says he has not touched a drop since 8 January 2007.

"People have been amazing, the support I've had has helped me a great deal.

"I think if I did go back on the drink, not only would I let myself down and my family down, but there are so many other people I think I would let down as well."
