Cycling clothing guide: jerseys

ShortsSocksJerseyLightsHelmetGloveGlassesShoes

Cycling jerseys are special shirts made from Lycra or other synthetic material.

They come in long-sleeved, short-sleeved and sleeveless varieties.

Most have three pockets in the back for storing small items - like a puncture repair kit or keys or even an energy-boosting snack like a banana.

They normally have a high collar at the back to protect your neck from the sun, and some can be zipped up to the neck at the front to keep out chilly headwinds.

Synthetic tops have big advantages over cotton tops.

Specialist cycling jerseys take sweat from your skin to the outside.

It takes a lot of effort to get a cycling jersey sweaty, whereas cotton t-shirts would be soaked very quickly.

It is especially important to wear a proper cycling jersey in cold weather because a soaked t-shirt feels much colder than a jersey.
