Isle of Man cyclist Mark Cavendish is still struggling for form as he prepares to defend his Milan-San Remo title later this month.

The HTC-Columbia rider finished 157th in the opening stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico in Italy on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old sprinter had a delayed start to the year after dental problems caused him to miss training and several early-season races.

The Tirreno-Adriatico is a seven-stage race from Italy's west to east coast.

Cavendish won last year's final stage, four days before he went on to win Milan-San Remo at his first attempt.
