Steven Burke, 20, from Colne, Lancashire
Burke burst onto the world stage in Beijing, with a bronze medal in the individual pursuit.
He had travelled to the Olympics as the fifth - or reserve - rider in the team pursuit, and did not know he was going to compete in the individual event until 48 hours before the race.
Treated to a Civic Reception in his hometown on his return from Beijing, Burke is ideally placed to profit from the retirement of team pursuiter Paul Manning.
He will ride in a team likely to include Ed Clancy, veteran Rob Hayles and Chris Newton at the World Cup in Manchester.
