Di Luca seals home Giro victory
Danilo di Luca celebrates
Di Luca has never won a major tour before
Danilo di Luca ensured a home victory in the Giro d'Italia for the 11th year running as he cruised home in Milan.

Di Luca finished ahead of Andy Schleck and Eddy Mazzoleni in the overall standings for his first major tour win.

"Before the Giro I thought I could win, but certainly not in this way," Di Luca said. "I crowned a dream."

Alessandro Petacchi won Sunday's 115-mile final leg from Vestone in a sprint finish in five hours, 18 minutes, 54 seconds.

It was Petacchi's fifth stage win in this year's Giro after he fractured his kneecap in the 2006 race.

Liquigas rider Di Luca, 31, won two stages and wore the leader's pink jersey for 13 of the 21 days of racing.

He set the world championships in September as his next major objective.

"This is my first Giro victory but I want to continue winning to make 2007 the best season of my career," he said.

"I'm going to take a break and I won't ride the Tour de France but I'll be back for the second half of the season and want to do well at the world championships in Stuttgart.

"I won the season-long ProTour in 2005 and now it's an objective again this year."

Schleck, of Luxembourg, finished one minute 55 seconds behind him and was the only non-Italian in the top six.

Final overall standings:
1. Danilo Di Luca, Italy, Liquigas, 92 hours, 59 minutes, 39 seconds
