Cooke wins seventh national title
Nicole Cooke
Cooke is the current World Cup leader
Welsh cyclist Nicole Cooke has claimed her seventh Women's National Road Race Championship, triumphing in a 63.5 mile race at Beverley, East Yorkshire.

The Raleigh Univega star's key break came on a steep climb on the final lap.

"I attacked all the way through but the decisive one was on the last lap, attrition was the key," World Cup leader Cooke, 23, told Cycling News.

Lorna Webb (KSV Deerlijk) beat 17 year old Joanna Rowsell (VC Londres) in the battle for second place.

Cooke won her first British Road Race title in 1999, and since then 2000 is the only time she has not claimed the crown.

Results:

1. Nicole Cooke (Univega-Raleigh) 2hr 51mins 29secs
2. Lorna Webb (KSV-Beerlijk) at 25secs
3. Joanna Rowsell (VC Londres)
4. Amy Hunt (Science in Sport)
5. Tanja Slater (Science in Sport)
6. Cath Hare (Fat Birds UK) *all same time
