T-Mobile rider Andreas Kloden has quit the Tour de France after breaking his right wrist in a crash on Tuesday.
The German, who finished runner-up to Lance Armstrong in 2004, sustained the injury on the 16th stage of racing and lasted 18km of the subsequent 17th day.
The 30-year-old T-Mobile rider had failed to live up to expectations after his excellent efforts 12 months ago and dropped out of the top 10 on Tuesday.
He lay more than 12 minutes behind race leader Armstrong when he retired.
