Spanish cyclist Efrain Gutierrez was recovering in hospital on Friday after suffering serious injuries in an accident during the Tour of Aragon.
Gutierrez, 24, was rushed to hospital in Zaragoza on Thursday after hitting a stationary car 14km into the 206km stage between Alcaniz and Sabinanigo.
He was reported to have fractured his femur and damaged his liver and spleen.
"Although his condition remains serious he is improving," said Andalucia-Paul Versan team boss Antonio Cabello.
Cabello's assistant Juan Martinez Oliver added: "The doctors told me that if he didn't start bleeding again he would make good progress."
Russia's Vladimir Efimkin, riding for the Barloworld team, won the stage and took over as race leader from Italy's Alessandro Petacchi, who won the opening stage on Wednesday.
