Boonen has been one of the form sprinters in the peloton this season, picking up a series of notable wins.
He notched up two stage wins in the Paris-Nice race and then was the overall winner of the Tour of Flanders.
The 24-year-old Belgian, a character of the peloton with his jovial presence, has long been heralded as a future king of the sprints.
He showed his potential by winning two stages on last year's Tour and was sixth overall in the points standings.
This time around he is one of the favourites to grab the green jersey in what is only his second Tour de France.
Away from his day job, he lists mountain biking as his number one hobby.
