Cipollini hit with fine
Mario Cipollini
Cipollini has had a poor end to the year
Former world champion Mario Cipollini has been fined for throwing cans at a motorcycle in a race earlier in 2003.

The Italian sprinter was made to pay 3,000 Swiss francs (1,350) for the incident, which took place during the Ghent-Wevelgem event on 9 April.

"Cipollini has to pay a fine for his unfair behaviour in the Ghent-Wevelgem race," said the UCI in a statement.

It continues a poor end to the year for Cipollini, whose Domina Vicanze team have been denied registration for 2004.

The team have until 8 January to appeal.

  • The UCI has also fined Alessandro Petacchi and Andris Naudusz 200 and 3,000 francs respectively for "unfair behaviour" during the ninth stage of the Giro d'Italia.
