Wales pick young Bowls Delhi team

Robert Weale

Wales' youngest major tournament bowls squad will travel to the Commonwealth Games vowing to win medals in Delhi.

Wales won two bowls silvers at the 2006 Commonwealths in Melbourne and the 12-strong squad, with an average age of 41, hope to improve on that haul.

"Wales has produced successful bowls teams in major international events," said men's team manager Phil Young.

"This one is particularly experienced and strong and includes some exceptional talents."

Former world indoor singles champion Robert Weale will be the bowls team's talisman as the 47-year-old from mid Wales has Commonwealth calibre after winning silver four years ago in Australia.

Weale will lead the way in the men's seniors while 58-year-old Carol Difford, the reigning Welsh four and two woods singles champion, is the ladies singles competitor.

Debutant Hannah Smith, the 23-year-old from Carmarthen, is the youngest member of Team Wales' bowls squad and brings the average down as the 2009 Atlantic Championship gold medal winner will compete for Wales in the Pairs event.

"Welsh women's bowling has gone from strength to strength," said Wales women's team boss Hazel Wilson.

"Including winning seven medals in World Bowls in New Zealand in 2008 and a total of 26 medals, including a team gold, in the Atlantic Championship in South Africa last year.

"We are a young team with a great future."
