Evan Longoria may have a similar name to a Desperate Housewives actress, but he has had a rookie season worthy of a Hollywood movie script.
Called up from the minor leagues as cover for injuries, the third baseman batted well enough to make the AL All-Star team and finished the season with a batting average of .272, while hitting 27 home runs and driving in 85.
Centre fielder BJ Upton normally bats second in the order with Carlos Pena third and Longoria at in the "cleanup" fourth spot. Upton hit four home runs in the American League Championship Series against Boston.
Switch-hitter Willy Aybar, whose injury in April earned Longoria his call-up, has played all four infield positions for the Rays after arriving at the club last winter - having missed the entire 2007 season while at Atlanta because of injury and a spell in drug rehabilitation.
