Cole Hamels posted a 14-10 win-loss record in the regular season with a career-low earned run average (ERA) of 3.09 - while his batting statistics are among the best of NL pitchers.
The Phillies ace was named as the most valuable player of the National League Championship Series, picking up wins in both his appearances on the mound.
The starting rotation also includes former closer Brett Myers, who moved back into the rotation this year - while left-hander Jamie Moyer, who will be 46 in November, is the oldest active player in the major leagues.
But one of the success stories of 2008 has been closer Brad Lidge, who was acquired from the Houston Astros last winter in a trade involving five players.
Lidge enjoyed a "perfect" record of 41 saves from 41 opportunities in the regular season - and five from five in the post-season - and has returned to the form which earned him the nickname "Lights Out" as he helped Houston to the 2005 World Series.
