Wakefield ruled out for Red Sox
Tim Wakefield
Two cortisone injections failed to heal Wakefield's injury
Boston Red Sox will be without Tim Wakefield for the World Series against Colorado after the pitcher failed to recover from a shoulder injury.

The 41-year-old Wakefield - a 17-game winner - has been struggling to throw at full strength due to an inflammation behind his right shoulder.

Josh Beckett will pitch the Series opener against Colorado on Wednesday.

Curt Schilling will start game two on Thursday with Daisuke Matsuzaka on the mound for Boston for game three.

Knuckleballer Wakefield had been lined up as a starter in games two and six.

Meanwhile, Colorado pitcher Aaron Cook was a surprise inclusion in the Rookies roster.

Manager Clint Hurdle said Cook would replace Franklin Morales despite not pitching since early August because of a muscular injury.

Jeff Francis hurls the opener for Colorado, followed in the rotation by Ubaldo Jimenez, Josh Fogg and Cook.
