Willis extends stay with Marlins
baseball
Star pitcher Dontrelle Willis has agreed a one-year $6.4m deal to stay with the Florida Marlins.

Willis, 25, helped Florida beat the New York Yankees in the 2003 World Series, but the team re-built to slash its wage bill after their triumph.

The Marlins had an opening day payroll last season of just $15m - one of the lowest in the major leagues.

His new deal gives Willis, who married in December and was keen stay in the Miami area, a $2.1m rise,

He went 12-12 last season with a 3.87 ERA, and is 58-39 with a 3.44 ERA in four seasons.

Among MLB's best pitchers when batting, Willis is the Marlins' career leader with 58 wins and 15 complete games and a co-leader with eight shut-outs.

The 2003 Rookie of the Year pitched 223 innings last season - fifth-most in the National League.
