England's Tracey Hallam reached the third round of the World Badminton Championships with a comfortable win over Ella Karachkova in Madrid.

The 11th seed took just 29 minutes to beat the Russian 10th seed 21-9 21-8 and will now meet Monthila Meemek of Thailand in the last 16.

Scotland's Susan Hughes also advanced with a 21-15 21-12 win over 15th seed Hwang Hye-youn of South Korea.

But England's 16th seed Andrew Smith crashed out of the men's draw.

He lost 21-19 21-13 to Indonesia's Sony Dwi Kuncoro.

Fourth seed Gail Emms and Donna Kellogg suffered a shock 21-19 21-12 third-round defeat to Indonesia's Zhang Yawen and Wei Yili in the women's doubles.

Emms played later with Nathan Robertson and won their mixed doubles opener 21-12 21-10 against Scotland's Watson Briggs and Imogen Bankier.

And Kellogg and Anthony Clark teamed up to beat Mike Beres and Valerie Loker and secure their place in the last 16.

The 12th seeds Robert Blair and Natalie Munt recorded a 29-27 22-20 second-round win over Taiwan's Tsai Chia-hsin and Cheng Wen-hsing.

Blair also enjoyed success in the men's doubles, where he and Clark beat Kristof Hopp and Ingo Kindervater of Germany 21-14 21-13.

Ian Palethorpe and Kristian Roebuck joined Blair and Munt in the last 16 with a 21-5 21-11 win over Nigerian duo Orobosa Okuonghae and Ibrahim Adamu.
