Brett Favre signs up for 20th NFL campaign

Brett Favre has confirmed he will play in his 20th NFL season after signing up with the Minnesota Vikings once more.

The 40-year-old, who holds the record as the oldest starting quarterback in NFL play-off history, had been expected to retire this summer.

But defeat by Super Bowl winners the New Orleans Saints in the play-offs last season left Favre hungry for more.

"I'd love to win a Super Bowl," said Favre. "I owe it to this organisation to give it one more try."

Favre spent last season with the Vikings, throwing for 4,202 yards with 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions during the regular season.

He has yet to fully recover from surgery on his ankle this summer but hopes to be fit for the start of the season in early September.

"There's nothing on me 100%," said Favre, who turns 41 in October.

"There was nothing on me 100% last year or the year before. But the surgeries, I think, have made me a little better.

"Playing 309 straight games [an NFL record that covered a 17-year period from 1992], I can't complain."

The Vikings beat the Dallas Cowboys 34-3 in the first round of the play-offs last season, helped by four touchdown passes from Favre.

But they were edged out of a return to the Super Bowl as they lost 31-28 in overtime to the New Orleans Saints, who went on to win the showpiece for the first time with a 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Miami.

Favre has played in the Super Bowl twice, winning Super Bowl XXI in 1997 with the Green Bay Packers.
