NFL chief signs off Vick comeback

Michael Vick
Vick's return to action could now come by the end of the month

Michael Vick can resume his NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles in the third week of the new season.

Vick, given a 23-month prison term in 2007 for bankrolling a dog-fighting ring, was released from jail in May.

After joining the Eagles, he was told initially that his full reinstatement would be considered by week six.

But after a 45-minute meeting with Vick, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said: "It's my decision. He's very realistic about the challenges ahead."

Vick will be eligible to play for the Eagles when they host the Kansas City Chiefs at Lincoln Financial Field on 27 September.

Vick, 29, made his first competitive appearance for the Eagles last week, playing in the first quarter only as his team beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 33-32 in their third pre-season game.

The three-times All-Pro has signed a two-year contract with Philadelphia after being formally dumped by the Atlanta Falcons in June.

His arrival prompted some Philadelphia fans to say they would stop supporting the team. However, fans gave him encouragement during his debut appearance.

The first overall pick in the 2001 NFL draft, Vick was once one of the league's most popular and exciting players before his stunning fall from grace unfolded in 2007.
