Rice not in running for NFL job

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has confirmed she is not seeking to become the NFL's new commissioner.

"Unfortunately it came open at the wrong time," said Rice, who is an avid Cleveland Browns supporter.

The NFL's top job becomes avaiable for the first time in 16 years when Paul Tagliabue retires in July.

Rice has often fended off questions about a potential run for the US presidency by saying she would prefer to be NFL commissioner.

"Obviously I'm very busy as Secretary of State and intend to continue to be Secretary of State as long as the President will have me," she said.

Last year, Rice took British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw to a University of Alabama football game and participated in the opening coin toss.
