Nick van den Berg with the trophy and Karl Boyes
Holland's Nick van den Berg turned the tables on England's Karl Boyes in the latest Eurotour Pool final at the BowlCircus Flamingo in Vantaa, Finland. Boyes beat Van den Berg in the final of the last tour stop in Austria but it was the Dutchman picking up the honours this time with a convincing 8-1 final win over Blackpool-based Boyes. Van den Berg said his fifth Eurotour title was one of the most satisfying. "It was sweet revenge and there was such a big crowd watching," he said. "Also, I promised my two-year-old son one of the trophies this year and his face was a picture when I showed the trophy to him."

Van den Berg, 30, was in top form throughout the 10 Ball event, although he had close shaves with England's Mark Gray in the semi-finals and Malta's Tony Drago in the last 16. He won a decider with Gray, from Bourne, after the latter opted to play a push out and left Van den Berg a shot he often practises. "It was a long top-spin shot with little angle and I had to go up and down the table for position on my next ball," explained Van den Berg. "I practise it a lot so I felt comfortable on the shot but I was very excited when I made it because it's never easy under pressure." Van den Berg kept his focus and ran out the rest of the balls to book another showdown with Boyes, who put out Austria's Mario He 8-5 in his semi-final. In Austria, Van den Berg was 5-0 up but Boyes fought back to win 9-6. There was no comeback by Boyes this time. Van den Berg said: "I had to come with my A game because he is the man to beat at the moment and of course I wanted revenge." Meanwhile, Boyes - who was brought up in Radcliffe - admitted he was beaten by the better player on the day. "He gave me a master class," said the current World 8 Ball Pool Champion after his appearance in his third successive Eurotour final.

"Nick looked strong throughout the tournament and he outclassed me in the final." Boyes was not too disappointed with his runner-up spot as it re-affirmed his place at the top of the Eurotour rankings and the event was Matchroom's cut off point for the Mosconi Cup selection. Following the Finland event, the European number one is guaranteed a place in pool's equivalent of the Ryder Cup. Boyes said getting a place in the Mosconi Cup had been his "burning ambition" since he switched from English 8 Ball Pool to the American game less than five years ago. "I can't wait to play in it especially as it is returning to London," enthused the 27-year-old. "I've had a brilliant year so this just caps it off." The Mosconi Cup - an annual challenge between Europe and the United States - takes place at York Hall in Bethnal Green from 9-12 December.
