Sheppard after another record
![]() Alison Sheppard: After the 100m record
BBC Sport's Bob Ballard reports from Sheffield's Ponds Forge on day five of the British Olympic Swimming Trials.
Alison Sheppard looks intent on adding the 100m freestyle Commonwealth record to her list after setting the tone for the trials with two records in the 50m freestyle earlier in the week. The Canadian-based Scot started well in her aim by clocking 56.47 seconds in the heats, some 0.6 secs faster than Karen Pickering. Stephen Parry got the better of James Hickman in the final of the 200m butterfly, but that position is likely to be reversed in the 100m event. Hickman, stronger over the shorter distance, set the mark with 53.46 secs in the heats, whilst Parry could only manage 54.88 secs. Another swimmer looking to double up titles is Adam Ruckwood. Storming
But Simon Militis, the 400m individual medley champion, will have a say in that. The Portsmouth Northsea competitor was fastest in the heats with two minutes 3.98 secs. Ruckwood was 0.3 secs slower. One of Britain's most improved swimmers of recent times has been the Reading teenager Rebecca Cooke. She came close to her personal best in the heats of the 800m freestyle with a time of eight minutes 40.11 secs, just two seconds outside her entry time. Prospects Of the five finals on the penultimate day - two of them feature genuine medal prospects for Sydney. Helen Don-Duncan is the new holder of the British 200m backstroke record after clocking two minutes 11.73 secs in the semi-final. But she's well aware that both Katy Sexton and Joanna Fargus, who previously held that record, are capable of going faster too. Bronze medalist in Atlanta, Graeme Smith, is hopeful of a comfortable Olympic qualification in the 1500 metres freestyle, while Paul Palmer will be hoping to add this event in Australia to the 200m and 400m he's already qualified for. |
