Ireland ended Scotland's run of four victories with a dramatic win in stoppage time in Inverness. The 14-11 triumph came thanks to a Shane Dooley goal his side fought back from being 8-5 behind at half-time. Scottish shinty's record points scorer Ronald Ross had grabbed the hosts' only goal during an even first period. But Ireland controlled the second half for a deserved win, although there controversy when the Scots were denied a penalty in the final seconds. Scotland captain Gary Innes thought he had retained the cup for the Scots when he squared the scores at 11-11 just at the end of normal time. "I am very disappointed as I let the occasion get to me a bit and so did the lads," he admitted.

"We thought we should have a penalty at the end there. It was a stonewall penalty. "But Ireland were well drilled and came prepared and having done their homework." Innes thought the visitors had won the tactical battle, playing a spare defender at the back to sweep up the Scottish attacks. Ireland captain Tommy Walsh was delighted to have won at Bught Park. "You don't get many chances to represent your country and it's absolutely brilliant," he said. "It was a tough game."
