Gomez set for world domination
Michael Gomez
Gomez (l) hopes to set up a fight with Freitas
British and WBO super-featherweight champion Michael Gomez is ready to conquer the world.

The 23-year-old from Manchester retained his respective crowns with a second-round knockout win against Newark's Carl Greaves in Widnes on Saturday.

The 1999 Young Boxer of the Year has now made it 17 straight wins and looking to defend his British title for the second time possibly against Liverpool's Tony Mulholland who had a points win over Leroy Williamson on the same bill.

"I sneaked out and had a little glimpse at him as that's a possible fight. If it's there I'd take it," said Gomez.

"There was talk of me fighting him before now but he'd never done an eight-rounder before, that's why he did one on Saturday night.

"He's unbeaten, he's a tough lad and I'd be expecting another hard 12-rounder if that fight does come off."

Ultimate ambition

Success would see the young fighter then face Scotland's Commonwealth champion Ian McLeod followed by a step up to European and World level.

His ultimate ambition would be to face Brazilian WBO world champion Acelino Freitas, who has knocked out all 26 of his opponents.

"The way to beat Acelino Freitas is with my brain," said Gomez.

"He's a decent fighter, but he's all brawn.

"I've been showing I'm a fighter at the moment but when I step up a level I'll start boxing.

"He's also been put on the floor a few times. He was put down by his last opponent, who had previously been beaten by Jose Manajarrez, who I've beaten, and he's been beaten by William Alverzo, who I also beat in America.

"I know you can't go off that too much, but it shows I'm up in that class. I feel like I'll be ready in about 12 months for that fight."
