Money worries for hockey players

Hockey: Guernsey v Worthing
Guernsey frequently have to play in the United Kingdom

The cost of travelling off-island could prevent Guernsey's men's hockey team playing in more national competitions.

Guernsey Hockey chief executive Andy Roberts told BBC Guernsey that the financial burden on players could restrict their fixture list.

He said: "The costs are astronomical for each of the players. Hotels, coaches, taxis; it all mounts up.

"We're talking in the region of the players having to fork out £15-20,000 this year between them."

One of the biggest problems Guernsey face is that sides drawn against them in the HA Trophy have the right to refuse to come and play on the island.

And Roberts said this can leave the players facing a lot of trips to the mainland.

"Because of the way the draws are done the maximum notice we get is two weeks, so you're on a last-minute booking to get flights to wherever it is within the UK."

Guernsey have just returned from Essex, where they won the HA Trophy last Saturday.

The side beat Henley 4-3 at Luxborough Lane and Roberts fears it may prove difficult to build on this success.

He said: "At this time I don't believe that Guernsey Hockey or the players can afford to be playing week-in, week-out which is a shame."
