Hughes hopes of home victory end

Susan Hughes
Hughes had been hoping for her first Bank of Scotland singles title

Hopes of a home victory in the women's singles were dashed when Susan Hughes crashed out of badminton's Bank of Scotland International Championships.

The Scot went down 21-14 21-19 to Estonia's world No.59 Kati Tolmoff in the semi-finals.

Hughes, 28 places higher at No.31 in the world, had earlier beaten England's Helen Davies 21-17 21-10.

Tomoff will face last year's runner-up Elizabeth Cann of England after she defeated two-time champion Ella Diehl.

Scotland will be represented on finals day through Edinburgh's Jillie Cooper, who went through in the women's doubles with England's Mariana Agathangelou, who was women's doubles runner-up last year.

They scored a fighting 21-12 16-21 21-17 win over Bing Huang and Chloe Magee, the fourth seeds from Ireland, who had knocked out Scotland's teenage hopes Kirsty Gilmour and Kirsten Geals in the quarter-finals.

In the final, Cooper and Agathangelou they will face Swedish second seeds Emelie Lennartsson and Emma Wengberg.

Cooper's place in the doubles final eased her disappointment of losing her mixed quarter-final with Watson Briggs when the third seeds went down to Marcus Ellis and Samantha Ward of England.

Scotland's other player in with a chance of making the finals day line-up was Andrew Bowman (Bellshill).

He and Welshman Martyn Lewis knocked out top seeds Ruud Bosch and Koen Ridder in straight games in the quarter-finals but then went down 26-24 21-15 to England's Richard Eidestedt and Andrew Ellis.

England's Rajiv Ouseph faces sixth seed Anand Pawar, the Indian one place below him in the seeding, the men's final.
