Williams wants more Games success

Heather Watson

The manager of Guernsey's Commonwealth Youth Games team has said the island must build on their success in India for the next event in three years time.

Tennis player Heather Watson won Guernsey's first ever gold at a Youth Games on Saturday.

And following her achievement, team manager Alun Williams said: "We need to reflect on that and work out what has helped contribute to our success.

"We need to work on some of the areas where we need improvement."

The challenge for this team and those who follow is to build on the success in the Isle of Man in 2011

Williams added: "It was obviously a significant achievement to get the gold and we weren't that far away from getting medals in some other sports."

Watson's medal was the only time a Channel Island athlete stood on the podium in Pune.

And Guernsey topped an alternative medals table of golds per head of population, ahead of Grenada, Barbados and Samoa.

"Of course, we can't take that table too seriously but it should remind the island of the fantastic achievement of the Guernsey team and shows that our youngsters were, to use a sporting cliché, boxing above their weight," Williams commented.

"The challenge for this team and those who follow is to build on the success in the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man in 2011," he added.
