Karina Bryant won Britain's first medal at the World Championships in Cairo by taking silver in the plus 78kg class.
After five convincing wins in the earlier rounds, she caught China's Wen Tong with a hold-down for an ippon in the first minute of the final.
The 26-year-old is in action again on Sunday in the open weight category.
"To open with a medal will set the Championships off on a high for the entire team," said performance director Colin McIver.
Elsewhere on the opening day, Rachel Wilding took seventh place in the under 78kg category, and Peter Cousins, fighting above his usual weight category, beat Cameroon's Franck Moussima in the under 100kg event before being eliminated by Hungary's Daniel Hadfi.
