Spain's Beatriz Ferrer-Salat won the opening phase of the dressage World Cup qualifier at the London International Horse Show, Olympia.
The Olympic bronze medallist partnered Beauvalais to first place in the Grand Prix, just pipping British duo Carl Hester and the 11-year-old Escapado.
The two join the 13 other top-placed riders in Wednesday night's freestyle, which determines the overall title.
Britons Richard Davison, Wayne Channon and Maria Eilberg will also take part.
Davison rode Ballaseyr Royale to sixth in the Grand Prix, Channon finished in 11th on Lorenzo while Eilberg was 13th on
Two Sox.
German Olympic team reserve Ann-Kathrin Lisenhoff will also be among those contesting the Kur (dressage to music) after taking third place on Wahajama Unicef in Tuesday's opener.
Lisenhoff's compatriot Heike Kemmer and her old campaigner Albano also progressed after finishing fourth out of a 22-strong field.
The London International Horse Show runs from 14-20 December and will be covered by both BBC Sport Interactive and BBC2 Sunday Grandstand.
The Interactive service will cover live the afternoon performance on Saturday, 18 December.
