Germany surrender golds

Leslie Law moved closer to receiving his individual Olympic eventing gold medal when Germany scrapped plans to challenge the final results in Athens.

The Germans were stripped of individual and team gold when Bettina Hoy was docked points for a rule infringement.

The decision meant Britain's Law was upgraded to gold in the individual and France were awarded top team honours.

Germany had planned to mount a civil action but on Tuesday coach Hans Melzer said that was no longer the case.

"We are sending all five gold medals to the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne," Melzer said after the last member of his team, Hinrich Romeike, returned his medal.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport's judgement also meant Britain's Pippa Funnell was promoted to the bronze medal position in the individual standings.

And the British quartet of Law, Funnell, Jeanette Brakewell and William Fox-Pitt were bumped up to team silver ahead of the USA.

It also left Germany down in fourth in the team standings, while Hoy slipped out of the top individual placings altogether.

"The athletes have decided to close the chapter on Athens and they want to concentrate on the future," added Reinhardt Wendt, head of the German Olympic equestrian team.

Wendt added that a number of legal advisers had encouraged Germany to fight on against the loss of the medals.

Juergen Thumann, president of the German equestrian federation, has also urged the IOC to find "more sportsmanlike solutions" for such problems in the future.
