Delhi edged out Hamilton to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games
The Indian capital, Delhi, is to bid to host the 2016 Olympics.

The city was chosen in November to stage the 2010 Commonwealth Games and will now attempt to hold the Summer Games for the first time.

Delhi has hosted the Asian Games twice previously in 1951 and 1982.

Despite a population of more than one billion, India managed just one Olympic medal at Sydney in 2000 - a bronze in the women's weightlifting.
