US into semi-finals
Uruguay v the USA at the Pan Am Games
The US left it late before claiming victory

The US men's basketball team advanced to the medals round at the Pan American Games with a thrilling 74-72 victory over Uruguay.

Rickey Paulding of Missouri hit two free throws in the final 33.6 seconds and Seton Hall's Andre Barrett tied up a Uruguayan player with 9.1 seconds left, forcing a key turnover.

The United States did not lead until early in the fourth quarter.

In other games, the US beat Argentina 80-79 and lost to Puerto Rico 86-85.

The Puerto Ricans won the group and also advanced, as did Brazil and the Dominican Republic in the other sector.

Jamie Carey of Texas scored 20 points and made all six of her three-pointers to lead the US women to a 77-64 upset of Brazil.

The Americans held Brazil to 21-of-52 shooting from the floor and forced 21 turnovers, including three shot-clock violations.


In the baseball competition, Pan Am hosts the Dominican Republic were edged out 1-0 by the USA, whose winning streak now extends to 25 games.

Nicaragua defeated Guatemala 5-0 behind Cairo Murillo's no-hitter, and Cuba defeated Brazil 4-0 in the other game.

America's women's water polo team, fresh from winning the world championship, routed Puerto Rico 20-2.

In fencing, Ivan Lee of the US beat Venezuela's Carlos Bravo 15-7 in the men's sabre final.

Eimey Gomez of Cuba took the women's epee gold with a 15-5 win over Canada's Sherraine MacKay.
